Hard Boiled Chicken (full version)

It's been... a while.

Since his first film "Shadows" I've had the opportunity and great pleasure of working on every short film made by Animation Works... a small studio here in Holland run by Arjan Wilschut. His third film "Hard Boiled Chicken is a hard-boiled detective in toon noir style about a rooster who tries to find the thief of the egg that was stolen from his chicken. Soon all traces point towards the farmer. But before the egg can be saved from becoming hard-boiled itself, the rooster and his chicken have to fight the farmer's cat for it...

HBC toured more than 30 festivals worldwide and won a total of 7 international awards:

-3rd prize Best Short Film at Cordoba Animacor Festival, Spain (2006)
-Special International Jury Award at Cairo Filmfestival, Egypt (2007)
-"IJzeren Haring" Best Short at Leids Filmfestival, Holland (2007)
-Best Animation Short at Kyoto Children's Filmfestival, Japan (2008)
-Moviesquad Junior Award at Holland Animation Film festival (2009)
-and two other awards in Bosnia and the USA.

And now... we can all watch it!

24 Hour Comics Day 2008

I attended my first ever 24 Hour Comics Day this weekend! I wanted to at least try this challenge once. Writing and drawing twenty four comic pages in twenty four hours! Alas, I didn't complete them all, but still got 10 "finished" pages out of it...

Still, only the cover can be printed in color... all the comics inside are gonna have to do with either a black & white or a greyscale printing. It was eventually up to me, so I went for the grayscale version...

Guilty pleasure - Nr. 1

Yes, taking from real life is the best or better way to learn how to draw things or keep that wrist of yours in shape. And it is that I just finished a nude model class with some comic/animation colleagues, (which will hopefully go on and on and on in the near future...) but sometimes I just have to sketch from mind in which I can take all the time I want/need and draw lines that don’t really exist. These then fall in the category "guilty pleasure" of course!!!

So, if you recognise someone -or perhaps yourself- in this drawing... maybe, just maybe you could tell me what she is, or you are doing inside my head!

Great news! The short film Hard Boiled Chicken by Arjan Wilschut (on which I helped with the animation) won the 3rd price at the Animacor Festival in Cordoba, Spain in the category 'Best Short Film'

This Thursday (and Saturday) Hard Boiled Chicken will also be showed at the Holland Animation Film Festifal in Utrecht.

Last week our Donald Duck Magazine existed 54 years. For that special occasion I made an animated party piggy you can invite for extra fun on you’re birthday (because non of his family or friends were able to come that day, uncle Donald had to have somebody to invite right?)

The design (and the annoying soundtrack) of the party piggy was made by my colleague Maarten Janssens, I did the animation and almost all the sound effects / voices... the interactivity I did together with another colleague, Bas Schuddeboom.

Workspace upgrade

Last week I upgraded my workspace some more. It was a little investment, but boy-o-boy does it feel great! Finally I got myself some filing cabinets for all my paperwork, such as bills, illustrations and 2D-animation scenes. I also got a new Wacom Intuos3 pen tablet and TWO 19" computer monitors...

...which is really handy, because now I can have one entire screen as work field and the other one for all the tools and options.

At work I won a bright orange fatboy® once, with which I made this little reading and inspiration corner just outside my workspace. Now, I did have to give up some space -because of the filing cabinets- but didn’t mind that to much though ;)

Of course I still use good old fashion paper & pencil and will never give that up! I like to have more options when I work.

The (Dream) Line

The last time I made a "real" comic strip was in february 1997. I never was one for long stories (tried it once when I was 8, but stopped after page 11 or 12 for some reason) in those times I mostly did one page gags (and they were terrible). Anyways, awhile back I was asked to make something for a new periodic Dutch comic magazine (small press) where artist can experiment in… as long as the stories were on theme for that issue and you made your artwork as traditionally as possible (meaning: only use pen and ink to make the artwork... no computer.) This issues theme was DREAMS... and I made a 3 page story about a narcoleptic (sleeping disorder) bum who has a number in his head. This weekend the magazine can be bought at the comic convention in Haarlem or via The digital line no doubt.

When I made the Gyro Gearloose joke robot for our Donald Duck site... I had no time to let him move when you do nothing (so that it’s not to boring to watch.) Luckily the people who made the whole thing interactive did… they made him wiggly wobbly a bit. Personally I didn’t like that everything moved separately... 'cause the rest of my animation didn’t also. A well! better luck next time.

I would have done something like this myself... but then with some eye blinking now and again.

In a little while I’ll be able to link towards the finished web-page... where you then can roll your mouse over different objects in this picture, and see them animate.

The meaning is, that when you click on a film poster you’ll link to the inside, where you can watch the trailers and extra info on a movie screen. When you do, you’ll first see a short animation of the curtains opening and the lights dimming. I thought this would aid to a more realistic movie going feel.

A couple of years back the (somewhat gullible) students of the CartoonSchool (a comic and animation school in Holland) were asked to come up with a character for this dinner and entertainment concern called Showbiz City... and alas! I was one of them. Thank the stars it never became a success and that they used any of the characters, because nobody knew anything ‘bout copyrights, royalties and so on. I’m sure the student whose character would have been picked out, would also never have seen one cent (nickel, yen etc.)

I’m not one of those people who experiments a lot with different materials... I should (personal growth being one of the reason of course), but always fall back on the same old stuff. Since kindergarten I haven’t used chalk for example... until now that is.

City logo illustrations (part 4)

WELL!!! I'm done with the illustrations for the city officials. Some I do like, but as I said; "They’re only understandable if you know those departments... so!"

This here was the last one I did and had to be about "youth" (that was all I had to go on really) so I thought; "Jantoedeloedoki" and did it kinda different than the rest... more my own thing (but still in that style of course.)

This here is the piece of paper I used to "turn" the hairs of the below brush into a fine and sharp point (during the inking of this cartoon.)

...and this is the piece of toilet paper I used to dry the brush (after washing it in water when I paused/was finished inking it.)

Bye the way... this was one of those rare cartoons I didn’t need to use any white paint to "fix" little inking mistakes.

When I scribble a character for the first time (and like) I always draw it in several gestures, facial expressions or poses, depending on how I think she/he or it moves and what I want to do with it later. From then on I have a hard(er) time drawing that character with a different kind of pencil... Don’t know if this is normal (I guess not, but what the he..)

In Holland/Belgium we have a (closed) forum specific for comic creators and animators (as there are no doubt more of, around the globe...) So because all the members are artists themselves we can safely show our (new) work to each other and get "reel" feedback from colleagues... instead of all these people telling that the work is bad or good, only because they think so! You know them better as (self acclaimed) critics and comic journalists...

Well... a while back, there was this colleague who was asked to make a short Flash movie, telling the story of "Puss in Boots" and showed the designs of his Puss to us... Good colleagues as we are, we then show some of our suggestions.

I thought this here was a funny new take on how (my) Puss would walk around on those BIG boots...

Today I was organizing my desk a little (again) and found a piece of paper, on which I had scribbled some thumbnails next to each other. I like to work this way... first suggesting the ruff motion before I go deeper into it.

Most of the time I just keep the thumbs to myself and skip the testing part until I have something more. But after scanning this I liked it enough to post on my blog.

Another animation (test)

Showing animation (or any type of motion) on this blog can only be done with animated gif's I discovered. The video-upload sites I know, don’t allow hot-linking direct to my posts... but redirect you to there pages full of advertisements. If you know a better way which doesn’t evolve this... please let me know how!!! It will have to do for now though. A simple animated gif file is great, don’t get me wrong (see header), but if you animate on 25 frames a second -using doubles as well as singles- the rendered gif’s timing sucks big time... especially on slow computers.

This is a small animation test I did for the upcoming new short of Arjan Wilschut, tested with a computer program called Ernest Le Linetest... I think this program is great, but it can be a wee bit unstable on some systems. And -as you can see- in this pencil test, the animation moves slower then it should be... so you’ll still have to us some of your own imagination.

City logo illustrations

Now and again (years may pass) I’m asked to make some illustrations for these city officials of a nearby town.

It started a couple of years back when I worked in a little shop run by several people, each supervising a different segment of the shop. There was a store part which sold the handmade clothes and woodwork made by the other two segments. And then there was a day-care part were parents -who wanted to shop in the city- could leave there kids...

The one whom supervised the woodwork part also worked as a DTP’er. It’s through her that comes these requests of making illustrations for the city. There stationery shows the city logo -a unicorn and a shield- and it was the only picture they could use. But they wanted more drawings for several of there departments... and you know how it is with civil departments right? There a bit boring and uninteresting or incomprehensible most of the time. So most of the illustrations are only interesting for the civil servants in such departments... these two I still like best, because... eh... well you can still see what the unicorn (horse) is doing.

stationery logo designed by someone I don't know

There was only this stationery logo, picture (whatever) from which I had to redesign the character. I couldn’t draw the unicorn in the same style, I’m not that good! And besides I already had a hard time as it was, letting a horse take on all these human poses. I mean the thing has no hands!!!

Nowadays they only want this (style) design... At present I would have done it very differently if I could, but I can’t, so it’s always very hard when they want some new material... and I just got the request for 21 new ones!

V-Desk

Okay I got several questions and compliments 'bout my "studio" setup (...see my entry of January 08, 2006) So I thought: "Why not just post what I have left of those schematics on my blog!" (after this here !#$% back-up CD resolutely says that almost all the file's on it are damaged beyond reading... and there aren’t even scratches on the surface.)

But first things first... I made the whole thing about 5 years ago, when I was still living at my parents house. And had to make it so that the whole thing could fit in this tiny bedroom I had back then... 2 by 3,5 meters (Sorry folks, but in Holland we use the metric system.) So I nibbled a bit here and there to make it fit in there. Another thing that will complicate things now -without the rest of those schematics- is to know how big the MDF panels are in a store near you, and then figure out how to get the individual parts out of them in the most efficient way, as I did... Besides I always make some small alteration on the spot, because it doesn't quit fit right away. Alteration which of course weren’t on my original plans. The only printed copy's I DID had of those schematics were very beaten up from laying 'round the work floor, so they were trash material afterwards. BUT after some digging in a big pile of my old stuff, I did find this drawing of the "Desk" that's around the drawing table. It hadn't had the dimensions on it though... so I had to backtrack some steps. Hope you all can figure out the rest of the individual panels' dimensions from here... if you would like to make your own. (By the way… after a resent inquiry to someone I know, who has one of those original Disney D-Desk himself... I can tell you that I almost used the right dimension when I made mine. Only a couple of millimetres off)

Also know that the work surface itself is mounted on a simple tiltable (is that even a word?) drawing table I already had (so that too is kinda custom made to fit that particular table.) Hope yours is quiet the same 'cause it's not some kind of fancy contraption that is integrated in the big "Desk thing" (wanted though, but that would have taken even more time then it already did...)

As for the light-box... well that kinda is the work surface (one layer of it anyway.) As you can see, I can lay a lose board on top of this light-box, because it will rests on a strip of wood… and the separate boards have some aluminium strip at the back that hold it from sliding sideways (and incidentally keeps the board from curving up, because of the hole.)

Making the V-Desk I used some power tools like a electric jigsaw, drill, router, sander... But as far as materials goes I just used MDF (wood), some aluminium strips, more screws then I thought possible (so the whole thing is re-screw-able... also is that even a word?)... 6 grips and 4 hinges for the drawers and doors... A piece of tin foil, 3 TL-lamps, 2 switches and some cable for the light-box... 6 short table legs, with adjusting screw (so I still can vacuum under this piece of furniture and the floor will not be to damaged after a while.) And to finish it all off I gave every panel a good layer of transparent acrylic floorboard paint. So now everything is as hard as steel and easy to clean.

Edit: Blogger's max frame size is apparently 1024 pixels wide... bummer! ‘cause now the scale doesn’t compute. But if you want the correct version, you can always mail me though!

Viktor or Vector?

I find it kinda funny and weird my parents named me Viktor... Did they somehow know my (ink) lines would be able to look like vectors. I don’t think they even knew what a vector was back then?!? Some mysteries of the universe we’ll perhaps never know.

Original ink size was approximately 9x7 cm.

But still... by letting the computer turn my lines into real vectors made it much easier to manipulate them, so that the client could choose which one she liked best.

Carpentry and how I work

As I am saying in my short bio: I like to do some carpentry now and again... You can make the stuff you need the way you like it. I'm a very spoiled artist and need a tilted drawing table with a light-box to work properly, so I made it myself (you can’t get these kind of animation desks in an IKEA now can you?) And because there were some big pieces of MDF (wood) to spare -whilst primarily making the desk and drawing table- I made a computer table too.

...still want to incorporate my Wacom tablet in the surface of that second table though! so that it isn’t in the way that much. I also made two loose work surfaces for my drawing table... which I can lay on top of the light-box, depending on what I have to do.

Been working on a small pre-school animation again for Animation Works

After having other things on the shelf which had too be finished first, it laid dormant for a few months, and seeing it back still made me smile... can’t show the whole thing yet and I’ll have to do it as a animated gif (so the timing is crap) but it’s my first attempt at motion on this here blog so... I hope this works out okay.

When I do cartoon's of Donald Duck, most of the time I want to put him in a pose or situation that makes him look even funnier or slightly off-beat in my eyes than he already is... although he still must look like the real Duck ofcourse (preferably like the Barks model.) But anyway... for these "small" cartoons we are more free, so I like making them a lot!

Oh boy! I am SO very, very busy at the moment... I haven’t got the time to updating this blog on a daily (or semi-daily) basis. And I just wanted these past 2 (free) weeks to be nice and relaxed, only having to decide what to post next over here... Ah well! I can only blame myself :-)

The last couple of days I helped Animation Works in making a teaser for a client. "And it always takes more time than you think!" In this case we (or should I say "I") had very little time to get the job done and I also live miles away from the AW studio… If everything goes right it will take me about 2 hour to get there, but it kinda never goes right!!! We got a really f*cked up travelling-system here in Holland, in which the trains hardly ever ride on time. So "normally" it takes me 3 (3 and a half) hours to get there. The first day of the project I worked at the studio over there and by the end of the day I took the (ruff) animation back to my place. The second day I worked the animation out at my own (homemade) studio and started cleaning... as always, very ZEN. On Friyday I went back to the studio (AW) and everything went right (with me changing trains) so I could be there in 2 hours. Was it not for me dozing of and riding straight past my stop, and all the way to Antwerpen (Belgium.)It’s just a few stops later, but to get there and back again did cost me about 3 hour extra! Because of this very not planned delay I took some of the last work back home to finish and scan myself. I hope the rest (Animo, colour, music, editing... the works) will finish it on time though.

The planning is (was) that this Monday the teaser had to get online... so maybe I will post a link if that’s possible...

I know this character I made a while back, is probably quite easily (re)modeled with the help of some 3D program... but I just like working traditionally a bit more at the moment.

...although I’m absolutely not unsympathetic towards CGI or anything!

Hey ya folks!... My first blog-post is one of a small cartoon I made for a weekly magazine in Holland called "Donald Duck" (it’s quite possible that you’ve heard this particular name somewhere else before...) Primarily, it’s made for the so called reader’s page, in which (mostly) kids write letters to Uncle Donald telling a funny thing or some adventure they’ve experienced recently. One of such letters is then picked out as "the letter of the week" and gets a custom made cartoon by its placing.

Alas! I'll only post thingies I make myself over here (...or else, will mention who did of course) but for these particular cartoons I didn’t do the final colouring, so...
